The Times review of Hamlet is in, giving Hamlet 4/5 stars.
The Times review is in already.
David Tennant and Patrick Stewart get two thumbs up. Unfortunately, the reviewer didn't like Orphelia and throught her dad was a bit over the top, I gather.
Also, the director made some cuts, which the reviewer found unfortunate, but hopefully most or all of the audience is going to the play with some idea of what it is about...perhaps if not having read the play, they may have at least perused the Monarch notes or something like that.
The reviewer went in (it seems to me) expecting to see Tennant's sometimes campy Dr Who faces--and was pleasantly surprised that there wasn't a trace of the good Doctor to be found in Tennant's performace--even saying that "Tennant has left the Tardis behind."
Overall, for the Times, a pretty good review. I've been dying to know how this Doran has interpereted the play--sorry about that one cut the reviewer mentions, 'cos I kind of thought that scene a bit significant, myself...but having only read and studied the play for two weeks, with a brief read of my old Monarch notes a couple of months ago, I am hardly in a position to second-guess a Shakespearean expert, am I? Obviously, even with the allegedly questionable cuts, the play still works exceptionally well. And after all, "The play's the thing."
