Why I wrote an essay for my math final:

In my 2-year college, you couldn't graduate without passing math. I took math 5 times--four times, before it was discovered I had dyscalculia and arithmaphobia! So, I took private turoring for a semester with my math professor, and then she wrangled me an exception--a waiver to not take the maths final, and instead, read an essay book on maths and also write an essay on what I learned from the book--got an "A" on my final--my first one ever in my entire 42 years of life, in math! I like algerbra, but brain damage as a child, procludes me doing all the mind processes required for abstract math logic. I also can't do "reverse" (subtraction, reciting things backwards, backing a car) well, either.

    Anyway, here's my quiz results:

    Your IQ Is 100

Your Logical Intelligence is Below Average

    Your Verbal Intelligence is Genius

    Your Mathematical Intelligence is Average

Your General Knowledge is Above Average

A Quick and Dirty IQ Test

  • Brain damage as a child ? You must be a living miracle then ! davidj

  • Gah, these internet tests are dime-a-dozen and mean nothing !

Get hold of a proper book by Eysenck or similar if you want to do them properly ! My IQ has ranged from 100 to 160 depending on the internet test I took and the amount of beer imbibed before said test :)

    All nonsense.

I've added something to your 100-story fund too. I'm being paid to sit on my ass in the sun, so I've donated a day's allowances. Going to a much better cause than my next beer !

    • Wow! Thanks! :) That's wonderful news. I'll have to see if they have that book in the library.

I like math, 'tho it's extremely frustrating, when you've spent pretty much a lifetime, trying your hardest, and then, some maths teacher will come along along, and say you're not. :(

Still, I do like algebra, it's just that side of my brain that deals with logic, sort of has a mind of it's own, sometimes (pun intended)! :)) I wrote down the author's name--in the words of the Galaxy Quest crew, "never give up, never surrender!" :)

PS--thanks for putting me back in a good mood.

      • They should have it in the library; Eysenck has been the standard for.. oh, decades.

In my line of work, I do maths in my head every second I'm in the cockpit. Fuel, height, distance, speed calculations. It's a constant workload, so I get to practice and use it every day.

        Most people don't !

Like all things, logic problems and puzzles become easier the more you do them. I bet if you get out an Eysenck book, score yourself, then go back to it a week later, you'll have a higher score each time ! The brain is like a muscle - if you don't use part of it, it entropies, and most people don't do algebra or mental arithmetic on a daily basis, so it's hardly surprising few people score well at it.

Especially as we get older lol. Now where's my memory implant and boost.... :)

      • P.S. Galaxy Quest - hysterical ! Takes the best of all the genres and pokes fun at them mercilessly.

Becoming a bit of a cult film, although it didn't do well at the box office.
